Hello everyone,

Iv noticed that every time I do a water change and I look into the bucket, my water has a green tint to it.. Im thinking its microscopic algae.. Iv thought about getting a Green Killing Machine from petsmart to help clear the water.. but Im not sure its worth the money.

Does anyone here have it installed in their tank(s) and how would you rate the quality of the unit? Iv read nothing but positive reviews online.. buuuut again, not sure if I wana dish out the money for one if its not worth it.

I stay on top of my water changes, and do have green algae growing on my walls, substrate, and plants from time to time.. but Iv also read that an aquarium with some algae is a healthy aquarium..

Any thoughts? Reviews?

Thanks in advance everyone :)

What is a "Green Killing Machine"??

I would just leave it alone if you do not see it in the tank (just in the WC bucket).

If you must you can try adding Excel--adds carbon but kills some algae.

Its a UV Sterilizer that PetSmart sells.. it supposedly helps clear out green water .
It works by sucking in water and passing it through direct contact of a UV bulb killing the algae...

I have a GKM.

The 24 watt unit works great. Although i've never had green water, it cleared up hair algae virtually over night. It also rid my tank (AFAIK) of ich. I like the fact that it's portable, so that you can put in the tank only as needed. It does have quite a few cords to contend with, which is a little annoying to me. Also be aware that this unit is very visibly distracting when it's in the tank.... large, and ugly. It's dead silent though.

don't know about the thread algae. the ich, i believe whole heartedly.

i see no reason not to buy it except for added cost to your system. then again a pinch of ferts or giving your lights a little more distance above the tank most likely could do wonders for the algae in the tank. maybe some carbon supplementation too.

You only mention seeing the green in the bucket. Do you see it in the tank under normal observation? does it bother you when you look at the tank? Or do you only see it in the bucket?

IMHO, if you only see it in the bucket then why bother spending money on a GKM. And then spend more money running it, and then more replacing the bulbs and maintaining.

I had green water 3 weeks ago. After 2 week of changing water and black-outs with no success, coincidentally Petsmart had a 15% off last week so i went out and bought a "green killing machine". I've been running it for 5 days now, greenwater is gone, actually the water is clearer than it has been before the algae bloom

Cons: it's not in line, has an odd way of attaching to the tank's wall, and it is a little too tall to put vertically in my 55gal. It's not real pretty to look at either
Pro: it's cheap (especially with the 15% coupon). And it work VERY nicely. I has discus in that tank so it might help prevent diseases too.

The pros are simply out weight the cons

Also had problems with green water. Finally installed a 9 watt GKM in my 29 gal tank and the water cleared up in a few days. For me, definitely worth it.

Well I have really bright green and slimy algae growing on my substrate now.. i have the rounded small pebble subtrate and hate how algae seems to cover it within days of cleaning the tank.. i also have algae growing on my plants.. im just not sure if a GKM would help with this issue.

It seems like i clean and clean my tank and rid of the algae only for it to come back 3-4 days later. I have a dual T5 GLO unit with a 10k and 6700k bulbs in it.. my plants are growing super nicely.. but i am getting a little too much algae than I would like to see in there.. i have begun doing 10g water changes daily, and stopped feeding as much.. hopefully this may help.

Id like to get a GKM just to try it out and see what happens..
