Yesterday I noticed that my Gourami had what I identified as a bulging stomach. I immediately raced for the computer and found that Gouramis are prone to dropsy/bloat so I was expecting the worst this morning (the internet assured me of imminent death). Anyhow, he looked great this morning..to my relief, as usual he began to eat the algae wafer that I leave for my pleco and loach and soon thereafter he was acting funny (hiding in the leaves and not moving) as he did yesterday and again had the bloated stomach. Just to mention previously he has always been super responsive to any movement near the tank.

My question is do I make the assumption that his feeling badly is related to the algae wafer or is it acutally dropsy...Does anyone have any experience to offer me?

My tank conditions have slightly low ph 6.8 because of CO2 and moderately soft water but everyone and thing else seems ok.

my powder blue dwarf gourami eats bits and pieces of algae wafers whenever i put them in there and i havent ever noticed him acting funny afterwards. thats just my experience though.

Sounds like he's just over eatting. Dropsy is when the scales stick out from the body, looking a bit like a pinecone. Swollen stomach, but no pineconing, usually means other things. In this case he just sounds like a little pig, :p:

So basically my Gourami eats until he looks pregnant. Well that's good to know. thanks for the help. It's good to know that I can overreact about everything.

I had the same situation. My standard Dwarf Gourami's belly was bloated, I asked on here, had a Dropsy scare, but realized that after a couple days, his scales were not sticking out. I decreased the amount of food I gave him, and his stomachhas gone down. He was just overeating.

my dwarf honey gourami was always too timid to compete with the tetras for food. he would see me move to drop in the flakes, hide, then the tetras would eat everything before he got up the courage to come out again. i got some algae wafers for my otos, and those stick around long enough he can actually get something to eat. so far he hasn't over eaten at all though

my gouramis eat alge wafer everything is normal....
