Hi!

I've been trying to stock my 135 with plants that my goldfish won't eat. It's worked pretty well so far, they don't seem to touch the anubius I have in there (have 2 different kinds). They ate all the Jungle Val I had in there, and fish stores told me that they wouldn't eat it. Java fern is okay, but they nibble at that too. I have java moss, which is in my other tank, crypt, in my other tank as well (without my goldfish), and luwigia.

Is there something that I can put in my tank that my goldfish will eat instead of eating the plants I have in there? I've tried putting zucchini and cucumber, but after a while, they don't eat seem to eat that anymore, and I feed them peas at least once a week. I'm going to try lettuce later today, but nothing seems to stop them from eating the plants.

I've looked through other threads, but no threads really say what I can put in there to stop them from eating my plants.

Thanks!

Janice

If the anubias are working then go with that. There are several varieties to choose from that are tall and quite large to the smallest and most petite of these particular species of plants.

you can cut up orange slices and toss them in, it keeps the fish busy for hours (and afterwards they play with the ring of the rind which is highly entertaining)

Just try many species until you figure out what works for you...

Java Fern, Java Moss - as mentioned... You may also want to try an Anubias or smaller sword (Kleiner Barr or chain sword) species.

Stay away from Anacharis (Elodea densa = GF salad bar).

Thanks for everyone's help ^^ I'll keep trying plants, and I'll stick mostly with the anubius for now. I've put a few types of swords in there, and they seem to love eating that, must taste really good or something.

Would the slices of orange pollute the water in any way? I tried the romaine lettuce in the tank yesterday, and they seem to like it, although it looks like they have trouble eating it sometimes.

Anubias and water onion are supposed to be herbivore safe.

I can tell you for sure to avoid the following: frogbit, duckweed, hygro polysperma and egeria densa. I gave some to a coworker who has goldfish and they ate everything. Of course, the fact that they only got fed once while she was in the hospital for a week might have contributed.

The orange does pollute the water a bit...especially since the goldies are nipping at it, but I wouldnt worry about it

As for plants, just try to see what works for you. As a guideline, look for thicker plants.
