I’m new to goldfish but totally addicted to them now.

When I set up my tank I got a bubble wall to go in the back because I thought I would enjoy the bubbles. When I hooked it up it seemed to be too many bubbles so I got a regulator to slow it down a bit. I have a Black Moor, a calico fantail and a golden fantail. But my three goldies seem to love it and swim back and forth over and in and out of the bubbles. I’ve adjusted it a little bit up but mostly left it alone because I didn’t want it to be too much for them. The filter that came with my tank seemed to not do all that good of a job and it made a racket so I just got a new filter with a bio-wheel and it has a pretty good steady flow across my tank when I set it up this morning. I was worried about it being too strong but all day long the boys have been swimming all over the tank more than normal and it looks like they are playing with the water flow out of the new filter like they do with the bubbles. I have to turn it off to feed so they can actually catch up with their food but other than that I think we’re all happy with it. I just wanted to see if someone else with goldfish had noticed that they seem to like moving water or if it is just my fish.

Goldfish like the moving water but if you can give them a section where the flow is a little less so that they can rest. A decoration will normally slow down the water enough so that they can take a break.

BTW how big is you tank? 3 goldfish will probably need a 55 gallon. They get big...

They have a log that they can go into or behind. They are currently still very small 2"-2 1/2" and I made the beginers mistake and know I'll be replacing my 15 gal tank for something larger someday soon and it will turn into a qt tank. I wanted to go bigger than the one I have now but got a good deal (was broke at the time) to up grade from the smaller one I had before with my origional 2 fish that I did before I read up on goldfish. One of those fish had passed after being moved from office to home and Pug, my black moore, did look very lonely and my husband got into the fish thing and we ended up with two more. I've been doing a lot of looking online at tanks and setting a bit of $ aside for the next upgrade something 30-40 gal range when I can. Until then I'm spending a lot of time with the boys doing water changes and clean up...I'm a little bit of a neat freak with fish tanks anyway. The point is to look at them and fish poo while unavoidable isn't pretty.

I'd like to end up with 3 tanks eventually. Maybe a betta in the bathroom in my current tank, and two larger tanks with goldfish because I'd like to have more than the guys I have now or if one of my guys turns out to be a girl I'd have some place for babies to end up.

If you have the room and the floor can handle the weight look into a larger tank for goldfish (100+ gallons). They really are awesome to watch move around in a larger tank with more fish. Goldfish live a long time and there is always that gorgeous one at the store. A larger tank means you can bring more of them home.

As for trying to save on cost, watch ebay, craigslist, freecycle, and your local classifieds. You can often find really good deals on larger tanks.

Thank goodness for me that the nearest 'real' pet store is over 100 miles away so temtation is limited to Wal-Mart. My rule of the moment is no more goldfish until I have my huge tank. I would love to get up to a 100 gal tank...I have a modular but you know floors can always be reinforced from below on those. I've been looking at ebay...watching 30 gal for $40 in Vegas right now. Room is a bit of an issue we have an almost no wall space living room but I'm thinking the corner of the kitchen or bedroom with a corner tank will work well but I'll have to keep watching for one of those because what I've seen of new prices they are out of my reach at the moment.

I'm also wondering how big they really will get considering they were Wal-Mart fish and I didn't consider size compaired to tank mates (assuming around same age) size when buying. I got the ones that looked best healthy wise, not dingged up, swimmin all over and ended up with some of the smallest fish they had. I've read that the fantail and black moores can get 6" to 8" average so I'm planning on that result when looking for a tank.

i have several 75+ gallon tanks all just goldfish and the goldfish are the size of oranges and grapefruits i have orandas, blk moors, fantails, ranchu's and some shubunkins they will get pretty big so keep a eye out for a good deal on a big tank and get some very good filters cause you know what they poop now wait till they get big looks like a chihuahua is crapping in the tanks sorry to be so vivid in the detail but its true. i filter my tanks at least 15x what ever the gallon size the tank is. example my 75 gallon tank my filtered water turn over is about 1,200 gallons a hour and my water stays crystal clear and the goldfish love the current and play in it like yours do now but there is a slower flow area where they can get out of it they want. and i have seen some nice goldfish at the walmart close to me and they will grow just as well as the ones from the pet store i have a few walmart orandas and they are doing great. good luck! ps i allow at least 15 to 20 gallons per goldfish in a tank that way the have lots of room to swim and grow.

I have a 55 gallon with 3 goldfish in it. I love to watch the Shubunkin dig into the gravel after bloodworms. Good luck with your future tank :)

WOW, you have exactly the same fish as I do! Yay ^_^

I've been thinking about filter too. I already do a lot of cleaning up and know it's going to be more of a hassle in a larger tank out of the bathroom. I think that's way I think of them as boys because they are messy...I know not totally fair to the guys but my male pets have been more messy than the female of the same. I had to laugh at "chihuahua is crapping" bit I have larger dogs, rabbit, and in the past horses so that still is going to seem little but then other than the rabbit the rest do it outside :) I also plan on getting a larger than needed tank for my current fish and adding slowly so I can see what my individual fish need for swimming room vs. the tank size and shape.

No less than a 55 for 3 I would say. Give them room to swim and play with each other.

Heres my fat oranda playing with my big comet, the comet got the oranda out of the water haha
