I was at my LFS today and I noticed the Gold Tetra. I will be stocking my 20 Gallon soon and I was going to stock it with a large school of neon tetras. But after seeing the gold tetras i may go with those instead. Does anyone keep these fish or have experience with them?

tetra_girl i noticed you're from Vancouver. Have you ever seen Big Al's carrying Gold Fin tetra's? They have more the body shape of serpae tetras but are primarily silver with goldish colored fins. I bought 6 from big als in burnaby about 5 months ago but haven't been able to identify them by a scientific name. They're all alive and well in a 33g community aquarium right now but i still have no idea on the scientific name. Any ideas?

I'm actually in Coquitlam and also go to Big Al's in Burnaby. ;)

I vaguely remember seeing the name tag "Gold Fin Tetra", but have no idea about them and have never come across any info/reference to them.

Could they possibly be some variation of Bloodfin (Aphyocharax anisitsi) or Buenos Aires Tetras (Hemigrammus caudovittatus)?

I really haven't a clue, sorry. But I would suggest maybe calling Big Al's and see what info they can provide.

Thought I'd bounce this topic up to the top again anyways in hopes of someone wiser being able to better help you and FuzMugly on Gold Tetras and Gold Fin Tetras.

Good luck to you both :)

Definitely not a bloodfin, the body shape differs too much. From looking at the Buenos Aires tetra though I'd say it's quite possible they could be a gold color morph. They resemble them quite closely in body shape and finnage shape. Thats a possibility that that could be what they are. Thanks.
