I have a male Gold Gourami that's less than a year old. I wanna get a female but I'm worried that he'll end up bugging her all the time. Should I get two females or is a 1:1 ratio sufficient?

Thanks in advance

Since the male has been in there as long as he has, getting 2 females would probably be safer, although I need more details to make sure you can have 2. What size is your tank and what else is in the tank?

80L long
overfiltered with canister
dense plants

inhabitants
1 gold gourami
10 neons
3 butterfly cichlid
10 amano shrimp

planned (what do you think of these?)
oto 1-2?
panda cory 3-4?
snails 2-3

I think I might return the neons if all that seems overcrowded

80 liters is only a 20 gallon tank, so I think you're already close to full: I don't recall how big Butterfly Fish get (we are talking about pantodon bucholzi here, right? If not, ignore me. :grinyes:), but golds hit 4" or more. That plus your Neons and I think you at the limit for your tank, even over-filtered.

But, to answer your question, if you had a larger tank, I'd have 2-3 females with the male. Golds can be aggressive.

Butterfly cichlid.;) It's blue ram (Microgeophagus ramirezi). I'd go with only a pair plus tank being heavily-planted. 5-6 panda corydoras will make fine additions as well. If tank is not provided with several thickets of plants, kiss the shrimps good-bye to the rams and gouramis.:grinyes:

Doh! :lipssealedsmilie:

Shows what I get for replying late at night. I'm so used to hearing them called GBRs that "Butterfly cichlid" didn't register with me.

See? I said he could ignore that part. :silly:
