Hi guys,

A week back I was at my LFS, and looking at their 90 gallon heavily planted FW discus show tank. While I was looking at the beautiful discus, and plecos, I saw some huge shrimp. I looked a little more closely, and saw that they were amano shrimp, but these guys were huge.

(about as long as this line) --------------------- :22_yikes: !!!

Is this normal, and will all amanos eventually get to this size?
My amanos aren't that big.

Does anyone have such large amanos???

that is just crazy

that means the amanos I have right now are probably semi-adults

EDIT:

I was just dropping some algae wafers next to my CRS, and amanos in m 10G FW, and then sat down to watch them for a while.
I saw one of my amanos find the algae wafer, and pick the whole thing up, and go hide in the rock cave in the tank away from the other shrimps.
The algae wafer is almost as big as the shrimp. Eventually, the other shrimp found 2 of the other algae wafers, and started to fight for them.

Yep, Amano shrimp can reach up to two inches. Dwarf shrimp is a bit of a misnomer. Most people equate dwarf shrimp to mean diminutive, or small overall in size. This is incorrect. Dwarf, in this instance, is referring to the size of claws, relative to the overall size of the shrimp. So, Amano shrimp (Caridina japonica, or whatever they've been classified as now) are a dwarf species. However, Glass/Ghost shrimp (Palaemonetes paludosus) are not a dwarf species, eventhough their bodies are the same approximate size as Amano shrimp. Their bodies are not that much larger than dwarf shrimp, but their legs, and claws are much longer.

Then there are the 'long arm', or 'freshwater prawn' Macrobrachium species which have looong claws. ;)

That's interesting. In all the years that I've kept shrimp, I've never seen an Amano shrimp larger than two inches. Can you post pictures? FYI, due to the refractive properties of water and glass, I measure shrimp or crayfish by netting them and using a tape measure.

I'll get some pics, not sure if I want to take them out of water to photograph them though... (I've got a few ideas on how to get some size pics)
