I have a gar in a 55 gallon tank. He only eats live feeders. Which are the best feeders to give him? most nutritious? He is quite a loner and is amazing when he eats. I worry he isnt getting enough nutrients. Any ideas about other foods for him?

It depends what kind he is. Needlenose Gar's, which are smaller, will eat Rosy Reds. Everglade and Alligator Gars, which are much larger, will eat Rosy Reds and Goldfish. You can also try feeding Hikari Cichlid Pellets. It may take him awhile to start eating them, (and some never learn,) but make sure he doesn't have any feeders when you first start to feed him pellets, (basically, make sure he is hungry.) You can also try freeze dried Krill or Frozen Krill that are in Flat packs, (as opposed to cubes.)

Gars like subdued light levels and lots of plants that either float at the top or reach all the way up to the top of the tank. Since they come from areas with strong currents, it also helps to have a powerhead (a water pump that produces current in your tank,) to have them swim against.

thanks for info

He is a needlenose gar and quite chunky You are right he loves to stay in the current behind the floating plants. We usually feed him rose reds and he seems happy with them. He does not eat the chiclid pellets he doesnt give them a second glance. But, I have teenagers who make sure he is never hungry.:)

Haha great.

Are you worried that Rosies will cost too much in the long run? If not, you dont even have to worry about getting him on the pellets.

Make sure you have a tight fitting top - all gars are jumpers

I have a type of gar too. According to what I've researched and asked around. The 'best' feeders to give them are 'minnow' type feeders (I.E.: rosey reds). Goldfish have a lot of fat. Guppies are better then goldfish, but not too much better because they also contain fat. However fish need the fat anyway (look on any 'fish food' ingredients). I try to pack mine full of protien right before I feed them to my gars (aka. gut loading). Live worms seem to contain the most protien.
