I have read varying information about the potential sizes for the different species of goldfish.. Could anyone clarify, once and for all, for the following species?

Oranda
Ryukin
Bubble-Eye
Telescope
Ranchu
Lionhead
Pearlscale
Shubunkin
Comet
Koi

Thanks in advance. :)

Common, American/Japanese shubunkin and comet goldfish will all reach an adult size of between 14 and 18 inches, depending on aquarium conditions and diet. Commons will be fatter than comets and shubunkins. Bristol (English) shubunkins grow to 12-14 inches.

I believe all fancies (Oranda, Ryukin, etc) grow to an adult size of 8-12 inches, again depending on diet and conditions.

Koi are an entirely different species - they are NOT goldfish - and grow up to 30-36 inches long.

There are only two species mentioned, all goldfish are the same species and koi are a separate species.

I agree with the posted info except that if I am not mistaken ranchus and lionheads will only reach something in the 6-8" range. Bubble-eyes and telescopes may also be closer to this lower end.

There are different breeds of koi just like goldfish and not all hit 30-36". Even the smaller ones are hitting 24-30" though.

Oranda 8"
Ryukin 7"
Bubble-Eye 7"
Telescope 7"
Ranchu 7"
Lionhead 8"
Pearlscale 7"
Shubunkin18-24"
Comet 18-24"
Koi 36-48"

Thats just some quick estimates....some of my fancies have reached the 7 inch mark already..

A pond is a large body of water, just like a very large tank. I think it would be hard and rare, but I don't think anyone can say it is impossible to do something in a tank that can be done in a pond. I can't get them to 18-20" in a 500 gallon tank? How about an indoor pond? Why is it impossible in one but not in the other? Easier in one, yes. But impossible?

shubunkin and comet goldfish cannot grow to over 20 inches, from what I have researched and heard from breeders. In any body of water, period.

i made a distinction between tank and pond because pond fish exhibit many differences from aquarium-kept fish that we can't completely explain, including color, brightness of color, fin length, growth speed, etc, that could be related to exposure to sunlight, bacteria, a number of factors. i simply meant it's more common to see larger pond goldfish than aquarium goldfish. the largest aquarium goldfish i can find or have heard evidence of are 18 inches, and the largest pond goldfish are 19-20 inches. it may be possible for a goldfish to grow to the same size in an aquarium as a pond. i wasn't suggesting different, only describing what my research points to.

My shubunkin goldfish are 10 and 13 inches right now :) And they got that big in a 50 gallon! :0 when I first got them I didn't know just how big they did get! And that was before I had ready access to wonderful internet resouces like this.

Black Moors can and do get up to 12 inches, I've had two twelve inchers, though I lost one recently. They didn't have any special care, I first got them when I was 6 they were my first "pets" i have vague memories of dumping whole containers of generic flakes in, a very very small 20l tank and never doing water changes.

Heres Emperor one of my last two twelve inch goldies (I had two fantails, 2 moores, I lost a moore to dropsy a fantail when fly spray got in her water) Enpoerer measures 33 cm or 13 inches from nose to the end of his tail

The other three are
Peach, 6 inch body, 12 inch tail

Pearl 13 inch nose to tail

Phasmid who isn't pictured was another twelve inch fish.

Just thought I'd show how big these fish can get, they aren't just crazy numbers
