Freshwater Species Book?

I've read the sticky with the books list, but none of those seem to be what I'm looking for.

Could I get recommendations on GOOD books on freshwater fish species?

I'm looking for something along the lines of Scott. W. Michael's Marine Fishes: 500+ Essential-To-Know Aquarium Species , but for freshwater fish.

I'd like accuracy, tank size, max size, social behavior, all dat stuff. I'd also like a book that has a LOT of species in it, especially "oddball" stuff you don't see at your LFS too often.

The Baensch Aquarium Atlas Volumes 1, 2, and 3. A little over 3000 pages on the FW side.

Then when you’re done with them, there’s the 900+ page Baensch Fossil Atlas. (200 million year old fossilized fish have very low maintenance requirements and do great in betta bowls)

That should keep you busy for the next decade.

My two favorites are :

1.The Tetra Encyclopedia Of Freshwater
Tropical Aquarium Fishes

By **** Mills and Dr. Gwynne Vevers

Hardcover, Tetra Press

Very good coverage of all varieties of freshwater fish, lots o' pics!!


2. The International encyclopedia of Tropical Freshwater Fish

By David Alderton

Hardcover, Howell Book House

Not as extensive as above, but has more oddball fish.

WOW! Those are awesome! Gotta get the Photo Index volumes too.

Dang. Some of them are out of print. Couple aren't available in paperback. Gonna hit Abebooks and see what's there.

Hrm, maybe I'll buy one of the cheaper volumes and take a boo before I shell out big $$ for the entire set.

Okay, that settles it. I'll get the Baensch series. I'll also pick up one of those other ones you guys recommending 'cause my kids will want to take a lot at them.

Hey, anyone can recommend a good 3-4th grade level book for my daughter? And a book for an extremely bright 4 year old? About 1st grade level, for him. Nothing stupid, something with personality and facts.

Any fish story books as well, for the 4 year old. It's because of him that we started with the fish tanks. He loves his fishes.
