Ok For my 10 gal tank I get the Impression from my previous post that live plants are good for EVERYONE in general. Now I need some more specific info on what is good and easy to care for and if I do neccessary need a special light hood for the plants or not. I'm trying to avoid getting the OMEGA light my boyfriend has but if I must then I must for the better of my unbought fishes.

Anyways Any suggestions on lowlight (normal standard hood lighting) freshwater plants?

I'll have my George (betta, male) 3-4 neon tetras, 2-3 cory catfish and maybe an algae eater ( not siamese, not sure if there is a difference if there isn't then no because SAE (hee hee) are bad I hear) and possibly two fancy tail guppies ( if George attacks them they go into my boyfriends 55gal tank)

THANKS!

Well, everything depends on what light you have. Is your current light flourescent or incandescent? How many watts is it? Once we know these things, we can suggest plants for it.

HAHAHHA that's the funny thing I'm so new I don't even have my hood yet so I'm trying to figure it all out before I invest. Any suggestions? I'm trying to work with minimal money source so I'm hoping to not spend more the 40 bones on the hood.

Oh and another detail that could be important for plants is that I was planning on getting an undergravel filter with normal gravel. Is this ok?

Someone had mentioned a type of moss of me before. Is that ok with Undergravel or still a bad idea? And my boyfriend has an undergravel filter for half of his 55gal is that bad too?

Siamese algae eaters are fine. It is the Chinese algae eaters that get aggressive and unproductive when they get bigger.

As for plants, it kind of depends on what kind of light you have. But Java fern, Java moss, crypts (c. beckettii, c. undulata), dwarf anubias, and maybe aponogeton crispus.

Well, snice you don't have a hood yet, I suggest looking for plants you like and then deciding what kind of light you'll need. That's actually the easiest way to do it, in my opinion. If you don;t know what kind of plants you want or what is available, I suggest the Plant guide at Plant Geek.Net. I would start by going to the difficulty section and looking at all the plants avilable in the very easy and easy categories. Find some you like, make note of their light requirements and also their aquascape placement (to help you sort of plan and visualize your tank) and then go from there. 20" hoods for 10 gallon tank are generally not too expensive so you're in luck. Onec you've made some choices, ask back here, or even better, in the Aquatic Plants section and people can give you some lighting suggestions based on the plants you wish to keep.

Plant roots clog UG filter plates lessening the effectiveness of them. Java moss won't affect it but it would make for a pretty boring planted tank IMO.
