Fish Identification

I came across a small fish in a guppy tank at WalMart that I could not identify. I managed to buy it for the cost of a goldfish and I'd like help IDing it.

It's about the size of a feeder guppy but has a goldish shimmering tint with faint dark bars running vertically alongside it body from about the gills back. When it swims it curls tail and flutters, much like a small puffer. I don't have a photo yet but maybe someone might recognize my description.

Is it freshwater? It sounds maybe like a brackish fish, put in the wrong place.

A photo would really help. I could probably narrow it down to at least family from that.

How on earth did you come to this conclusion? That fish could be about anything from the discription. We need a pic. to even start guessing.

Could be a guppy, a danio, a baby JD some sort of african cichlid, a goby, baby goldfish, mabey a rainbow trout?

I am familiar with most freshwater aquarium fish and I have never seen anything like this, which is the reason why I posted my question here. When I first saw it, particularly the way it swam, the first thing that came to mind was that it was some type of brackish water fish but I could be wrong. I'll try and get a picture and get a picture up as soon as possible.

I didnt mean to sound harsh in my last post, but all too often people make random guesses like this and it doesnt really help (although Im sure it was meant to). Fish Id's are really hard without a pic. Any discription without a full scientific breakdown leads to unfounded guess work.

Thanks for backing me up, fisherking.

I am an ichthyologist/marine biologist in training (in graduate school currently) with a background in fish physiology and ecomorphology, and it doesn't seem to match any freshwater fish I can think of, offhand (from the way it swims). I get these kind of questions directed at me, and my lab, quite often.

Just felt I had to justify myself :p: But no offense taken, sumthin fishy.

Anyway, yes, a photo would definitely help.
