I'm learning that I need at least a small quarantine tank if I want to do this fish thing right. I also want a pica shrimp tank that is easy maintenance.
How do I filter these tanks without taking up too much room?

Ok well a quarantine tank is a good idea, there are some really small filters that typically come with those tiny tanks. Even Top Fin's 5g tank comes as a complete set I believe.

Might be a good interim filter for that size tank. Top Fin's products are the cheapest in all areas of the word, but all that said if it is able to fit your needs you can use it for quarantine since that is only a temporary time frame. There are other filter companies that make higher quality filters, for a higher price.

I meant to say that a hang over the rim filter method would be what you probably need.

Elite makes a great little filter that is perfect for small tanks in that size range. i have an Elite 5 Hush hob on my 2.5 gallon betta tank and have the flow turned down halfway.

here is a modification i made to the filter so that you don't have to bugger around with the cartridges: http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=228768

Red Sea Nano Art Deco and the identical Azoo Palm HOBs are rated to 3g but can be used on a 5g if you don't need a lot of gph. You'll probably want to add a sponge to the intake on any HOB, to help prevent injury to weak fish. If used in a shrimp tank, the sponge will also create a welcome feeding ground.

Or just use/make small sponge filters, which are perfectly suitable for QT or shrimp uses.

The nice thing about an HOB filter is that you can hang it on your regular tank to keep it cycled and then just move it to the QT tank when it's in use (assuming you aren't using the same tank for pico and QT)

sometimes the smaller filters don't fit on the rims of larger tanks. i found this to be true when trying to fit a small hob (not the Elite one) on my 55 gallon.

Depending on the type of media used in the HOB, it might be possible to keep it tucked away somewhere out of sight in the main tank. That would keep it full of BB and ready for use in the QT.

:iagree: great idea!

I use an Azoo on my 2.5 betta tank. There are two sizes to the azoo palm filters - the gph will show the difference, not sure if there's any difference in the name on the box. My azoo is the tiny one - the other should easily filter a 5g tank.
