Fighting Betta Fish Culture - Research! I need YOUR help!

I have a research project I'm trying to conduct among the Cultural ritual of fighting Betta fish. I know a TON of people are against fighting Bettas but the truth is, it still happens. I'd like to understand this event more by doing some research on it. It is a cultural event in some Asian countries that has been brought over to the US and all other parts of the world. A friend of mine participates in these fights and while I, myself, don't participate in it due to my own morals, I'd like to understand it better.

Please be aware that this is STRICTLY for research only. It will not be disclosed to the public. It will only be seen by myself and my professor.

I had a very fancy betta; an OHM, steel blue male betta. I didnt want to see his fins all torn up, and its not really something I would enjoy watching. Also, I didnt really go around looking for bettas to fight mine.

I personally thing its wrong, just as dog and rooster fighting is. unfortunately, bettas fighting really isnt seen as "cruel" or even illegal since the victims are just fish. Plus, it would be extremely hard to keep track of since you only need a small bowl and two sandwich bags filled with water and a betta in each to have a "fight."

I have never fought beta's because theres no real point to it... why torture 2 beautiful fish just to see them rip each other apart? I would never try it because i am against hurting fish and love the beaty of beta's male and female

I do not like the idea of fighting betas. it makes me mad some1 would willingly hurt a fish just because of what it is. it also makes me sad to see a poor fish being expoilted by a bunch of morons looking for some excitment:swear:

i have never had the opportunity to fight bettas, which doesnt matter because i wouldent anyways. i find that its inhumane and a waste of innocent lifes

i belive its wrong, and would love to see it stoped. its pretty harsh to put to animals in a bowl so they could kill eachother

I believe that it is wrong and I would never try it. It is as cruel as any other animal fighting sport that people do.

Forcing animals to fight to the death is just wrong on so many levels. It’s just killing fish for entertainment which is both morally and ethically wrong (not to mention inhumane). I don’t understand why people would want to do it in the first place, and it should be stopped.

I see no point in fighting Bettas or any other animal, for any reason.

I have a moral objection to making animals fight for entertainment. I would never intentionally set them up to fight.

I think it's morally wrong to force/train any animal to fight. But it's not my place to condemn other cultures for their values.

No, I wouldn't try it. I don't think it's right to do that to animals. It's harsh.

I think it's wrong to do so. It's like letting people fight each other without police. Think about it.

I see bettas as the pitbulls of the fish world...while they have been bred to be aggressive and/or beautiful (based on breeder goals), that is far from all there is to them. I have owned 4 bettas (2 currently still with me), and all have/had amazing, docile personalities getting along great with everything in my community tank including a couple that even get along well with fancy guppies . When socialized and given space to roam, their personalities really come out as intelligent, curious, and even sarcastic at times...not mindless, vicious fighters. Even without that experience, I think fighting any animal is wrong on a moral basis. Just because they can't speak doesn't mean they don't feel pain.

It's wrong. Knowing how personable these fish can be when given the opportunity, I see this as no different than intentionally treating a dog to inhumane conditions to turn it into a fighter when it could have been a loving part of the family.
