So, I've read a lot about how you should keep more platy females than males to disperse his sometimes aggressive and tiring advances. In stocking my little five gallon tank, I got 2 platies, both of whom looked like males. However, after some confusion, I think the bigger one if female. The little male definitely has a gonopodium thing, but the other one had a black find that was always folded tight. Once she got used to the tank, she spread that fin and now I think it's a girl. Not only that, but she's gotten a little bigger, in length AND width a little bit. (Do platies grow that fast
)
Annnyways, I wondered if I should get a third platy so the male doesn't do anything stressful. but I need not worry apparently - the male is rather shy and wile they coexisted fine, he's recently taken to hiding! It's like they had an argument while I was away. >_>
I fed them to see if he came out when looking around the tank didn't help. He did, but then the big female chased him all around the tank until he hid again.
' I thought ...well I thought the male did the chasing?
The female is tough. She hovers in the tank like she owns the place, knows when feeding time is, knows who I am and that I have the food, doesn't bother the cories, tells the Male off when he does this little dance, and now, all of a sudden, keeps him in hiding.
She likes to mess with my betta whose tank sits right next to hers, she picks at the tank decorations, probably getting little bits of food or algae or something off things, and swims with some major confidence. o-o
So...is this just a personality thing? Or is it not normal? Or maybe she's really a he and he's really a she?
OMG or maybe she's preggers and she's gone hormonal? x_x! She doesn't seem to nip at him, just herds him back into the little tree stump house. Next time I feed them I'll watch more carefully and make sure he's getting food cuz I couldn't tell when I fed them today.
