Do female bettas prove to be as unfit for community tanks as male bettas? I know there are exceptions to every rule, but in general? (Looking for natural fry population control)

I think it is kind of a false statement to say a male betta is unfit for a community tank.

As long as there isn't a male betta (or similar species, such as a gourmai) or an aggressive species, a betta is an awesome fish for a community tank.

sometimes they are, some times they aren't shaunakadub. I've tried Betta's about 3 times in community tanks and never had good luck. I know many others have had good luck. From talking with other people and my own experiences, I'd say Betta's are almost never good with guppies. Both male and female betta's were killing my guppies and they'd chase mollies but never caught them. Betta's are tricky fish because they succumb to fin nippers quickly but they will be aggressive in many cases as well. About all you can do is try it and be ready to move them if need be. Kyle

Ahh your right, I forgot to add anything with flowing tails could cause a problem as well.

I have three female bettas in a 29 gallon community tank, and they don't bother any of the other inhabitants, but I have noticed agression among them.
The smaller ones have nipped fins, and they seem to threaten each other the same way males do (I didn't notice at first that they also flare their gills.)
The largest one chases the smaller ones around, but the two that are of equal size seem to like swimming together, and do often.

I have a small male betta in with my guppies in a 55 gallon along with a rainbow shark and ghost shrimp. The guppies have pretty long tails but I've never noticed the betta actually attack them, though he will flare and chase them when they get to close. I think it really depends on the size of your tank and whether you end up with a very aggressive male.

It really depends on the Betta. They each have their own personalities. I have a Male in with roughly 15 guppies, and I haven't had a problem. I also have a female Betta that was beating up all my other fish and had to be moved into a tank where all the fish were bigger than her. For the most part you can keep female Bettas together. I don't know where the idea that Bettas and gouramis can't be together came from. It doesn't make any sense. They are both Anabantoids, but I don't see how that could make a difference.
