Hi all, I have just completed a 55G tank and am going to put in just five 2" Piranhas. No other fish. My question is can I feed them small fingerling fish from the sea from a pier near where I live? Will the introduction of saltwater fish (even for a brief period till they are eaten) cause any problems ?I live in India.
Thanks

It's not so much the introduction of saltwater fish as it is the introduction of possible contaminates and diseases that they could carry from your local waters that would be a problem for your fish, even deadly.
Now if you were to catch larger fish, clean them as if you were going to fillet them for yourself, it wouldn't be as much of an issue. But I'm assuming you are wanting to feed the P's live foods.

Yea, I get your point. I guess what I will have to do is to setup some sort of holding tank and keep these fingerlings for a week or so. Should I treat them with an antibiotic or something first, wait for a week till the drug is out of their system , and then introduce them into the p.tank ?

Why not just setup a small tank and raise some guppies or platies? Cheap and easy to do.

Not to mention you can buy frozen silversides, which are pre-soaked in vitamin solution. They're way better for the fish and pirahna are not actually known for being very predatory. They're more scavengers and opportunistic feeders. The only reason they go after live food is because there is no other source of food available (such as during the dry season). This is one of the reason they make good fish for an aquarium.

What type of pirannah are they. I know the red-bellies get fairly large and agressive. A guy I work with had one in Pa (legal there) in a 55 and it cracked his tank by ramming it. It rammed the tank every time he came in the room, eventually he had to get rid of it.

hopefully thats a starter tank for the P's, I wish we could have them here in western NC but they figure some idiot will put them in the river and they will breed or something
