Feeding Dwarf Gourami and temperature?

Greetings,

I've just added 2 Dwarf Gourami to my 20g tank. I've been feeding the other fish (6 white cloud minnows and 1 leopard danio) tropical fish flakes. Do I need to feed the gourami a different kind of food? I seem to recall seeing food labeled Cichlid at the LFS.

Also, what temperature do gourami like? I've been keeping the tank at about 76-78 for the other fish. Is this ok for the gourami?

And, is one brand of flake food better than another? I've been feeding Wardley, but have also fed Tetra Min, and have BioBlend pellets.

Thanks in advance!

Margaret

I think your temp should be okay.

At the office tank we have a honey gourami and it readily eat tetra-min flakes, spirulina flakes and frozen food. What you have is fine, although you may think about adding a bit of variety to your fish's diet. Some frozen food, a few veggies here and there for them to graze on if they will eat it.

I have 4 gouramis Margaret you will love these guys. I have 2 dwarfs. They eat just about ANYTHIGN including your dead BEFORE they are actually dead, they seem to sniff out when another fish has aquired a weakness before my other breeds do. I feed mine bloodworms and baby brine shrimp and the tropical flakes alternating them. Its been my experience they will keep eating if you let them so be careful. No cichlid food although they probably will eat it but they arent a cichlid they are a labrynth. I've had mine about 3 weeks. Both with nibble at ME and one will rub against my arm like a cat. They are almost to the point I think by next week they will take food from my fingers. I met someone who does this and they come up to the surface just like little puppies on there hinds when its feeding time. Im gonna get another tank to house Gouramis only. I've just fallen in love with this breed. I want a kissing gouramis in the worst way.

Gouramis tend to like it warm. My research has shown most recommendations about 81-82. I keep mine at 80 because i have more than one breed. PH they like about 6.8 I keep mine though between 7.0-7.2.

Hope this helps good luck.

Flake food is fine for dwarf gouramis, although you should vary the diet for all the fishes by mixing in veggie based flake foods and frozen or live foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms occasionally.

Cichlids are a species of fishes and the food labeled for cichlids tend to be larger in size and sinks, otherwise there's little difference.

76-78 is fine for most tropical fishes including gouramis.

Regarding brand names and fish food, I personally feel that the differences between brands are so miniscule that it has little bearing on the choice. feed them whatever's cheaper.

I have a little off topic post here - and I'm no moderator so take this with a grain of salt (a little humour from another post).

Puresouthern I was just wondering if you can just hit post reply rather than quote when you respond? Unless of course you are actually responding to a specific line or paragraph that you want to bring attention to.

Otherwise, it makes the threads really long..

I know i'm sorry I was noticing that but was feeling to lazy to go and delete the sections not warranted. Sorry :D

Not a problem... and I'm just too lazy to read long posts ;)

You'll want to make sure the flake food has a high vegetable/algae content. Gouramies naturally eat mostly algaes and vegetables, but they will eat any meaty foods you offer. A meaty diet can result in constipation--not a good thing.

Dwarf gouramis are great fish. I have 2 in my 75g and they get along well. They don't bother any of the other fish and will eat mostly anthing that I put in the tank. The only thing that I notice about them is that they'll eat something and then blow it out of their mouth, and then suck it in again. I have no idea why they do this, just something I've noticed.

I was thinking of getting some but have heard they can be difficult (for a beginner) and prone to disease? Also what is there average lifespan? I'm having a difficult time finding that out.
