Febreeze (and the like)

Aerosols are really bad in proximity to a fish tank. As far as febreeze goes (which obviously isn't an aerosol), my wife uses it near my tank and I have had no adverse effects or inexplicable losses. I will say however that we have agreed upon a perimeter of 5 feet around the tank that is febreeze and aerosol free.

Febreeze makes an anti-bacterial spray now, right? I should think it very important to keep Febreeze, Lysol, Oust, etc. away from your tank, lest it be carried on some draft into your biowheel or tank in general where it may kill some of your precious cycle bacteria.

if it gets in the tank it could kill them. if you have a lid and dont spray directly at the tank you should be fine. febreeze is supposed to be petsafe but they only mean furry pets cause it will kill birds etc.

Y'know they say febreeze is pet safe but I just dont believe it. I had two cats develop seizure problems within two months of my starting to use this product when it first came out years ago. The cats werent related (sorta ruling out a genetic predisposition), so I found it hard to believe it was just coincidence. Poor kitties. I've never used it since.. and it definitely does something to birds, a friend of mine lost a lovebird and attributes it solely to febreeze.. her mom had sprayed the basement and the birds cage was at the basement door in the upperlevel. :(

uh oh... do you guys think that having one of those febreeze "scentstories" player things could harm fish in the same room? it does'nt spray, but when you smell things, it is particals of whetever it is your smelling...

I don't take much stock in any of these products that simply "mask" the scent. I find it much easier to keep the house clean. If tank scents are a problem try setting the tank next to a window that gets very little or no direct sunlight.

As for products that are reputed to "kill" odor-causing bacteria, I don't see how they could possibly be pet safe, much less human safe. The less chemicals around the house, the better. And that includes the tank.

Febreeze is based around a low level bleaching agent with added smell. The smell will carry but the bleacing agent will stay on the surface it is sprayed on. I would still avoid using it on a fish tank.

Products like fabreeze just mask odors. I would rather clean and get rid of source odors with plain old vinegar and water solution, it is eco-safe and allergen free. A weak solution in a spray bottle works, and after it dries the frenchfry smell disappears too.

What are the chances that fish can be deadly poisoned by routine spraying of a product like Febreeze
I use frebreeze and haven't killed any of my pets with it so far ...I do mantain a spray free area around my tank and spray only the carpets in that room in otherwards close to the floor that way particals are less likley to float up to my filter...and i dont do it to mask oders though i just like the faint scent and don't like burning candles with little kids and dogs and cat running round ..as long as you don't over spray the room with the tank you should be ok..
