hey, I'm just wondering how low a temperature can fancy goldfish tolerate and for how long? I want to simulate seasons in my new goldfish tank. I would let the water temp drop to around 50 and keep it there for around 5 months. could a fancy goldfish survive in water this cold for this long?

I thnk they could survive it, but fancies aren't really bred to withstand temps like that. I think it would be detrimental to their health. You would be better to stick to the mid sixties.

so I guess I should just keep one of the commons then? I like to keep my room in the 50s most of the time (yes, I am half polar bear:dance2: )

also, can the more common types of crayfish also survive in water this cold?

OR...you could just buy a heater ;) The commons are really only meant for ponds...they get much too large for the regular aquarium setup.

well...... that'd kind of defeat the purpose of trying to simulate seasons. i'd go out and catch natives, but it's illegal, so i have to settle for something just as tough.

perfect, because I want to make my tank just like an outdoor pond but made of glass. i'll just upgrade as it grows, we alaskans get close to 1,000 dollars every year just for living here so I will get money sometime this year to upgrade for sure.

Is this for the goldfish in the 25? I wouldnt go lower then 60F. You could still use a heater and have seasons. If your room is realy cold and the water drops below 60 just set it for 60. My house is allways cold too. When friends come over they dont take off their coat. You get paid just for living in alaska?!

I keep my room cold on purpose.

I think I will watch and observe my oranda to see his individual tolerances. so far it seems that he is not very tolerant of cold water, so i'll keep him no colder than 50. i'm actually doing this to see if goldfish benefit from going through a natural winter period or not, and finding out their individual tolerances. 4 of the goldfish seem to be doing fine in this cold water, including my fantail, but my white/orange common and oranda seem to prefer warmer temperatures.

I don't understand why you asked the question in the first place. Please don't ask advice if you are only doing it to find someone to agree with you.

LOL i'm not disagreeing with you, i'm saying that apparently a goldfishes resistance depends on the individual as well as the breed, in other words, you are correct and I do agree with you, but only partially. I would never make a post finding someone to agree with me.

i'm actually still wondering if anyone knows yay or nay on goldfish benfitting from a winter inactivity period.

I would venture to guess that the only good thing about having the "winter" period, would be to jumpstart breeding when the temperatures warm up. Otherwise, I personally believe that it is putting unneeded stress on the fish and will untimately result in a shortened life span. Temperatures that cold will cause stress on the body. Especially for the fancies who aren't bred for cold temps.
