would those 2 types of fish work out in a ten gallon?
a couple puffers that only get 1 inch long and about 4 shell dwelling cichlids.
thanx

I would say no mainly because of water perameters.

Shellies like hard alkaline water as they are from rift lakes, the most common ones are from lake tanganyika.

Dwarf puffers are from the amazon I believe, there for liking soft acidic water.

Puffers also like heavily planted tanks.

dwarf puffers are actually from India and I doubt either dwarf puffers or tiger barbs would do good with shell dwellers. both Puffers and barbs swim in middle and lower portions of the tank and sometimes venture to the top. Shell dwellers tend to stay near the bottom and fiercely defend their area. Puffers also tend to instigate fights and pick at other fish till they're dead. I also think water parameters would be different between the fish as PumaWard already pointed out. Stranger things have happened but I don't see these fish getting along. Do you have shell dwellers? If you already do, there may be some other cichlids that will work with them. I know many shelldweller keepers have danio's of some type since they prettymuch stay topwater and don't bother the shell dwellers much. the 10 gallon tank is going to throw a wrench in there as well. Puffers are generally messy eaters so that increases the bio-load. Tiger barbs need a group of at least 5 or more to keep them from killing eachother or other fish. This alone takes up the bioload of the tank. If you were to pick any one of the 3 fish and make a species tank would be your best route. We have a 10 gallon puffer tank and they are neat to watch, especially when you drop some snails in the tank and watch them rip them to pieces. I also have a 36 gallon tank with several barbs with some other fish. I am currently setting up a 20 long shell dweller tank too. I think they all are interesting fish. Kyle

I have to vote no also. Size of fish here is not the issue. I believe dwarf puffers are actually a more neutral to slightly alkaline fish. Even then I don't think there would be enough room in a 10g tank for there not to be a fight and dwarf puffers can do some damage with those mouths of theirs.
