Anyone have any experience with this and is it a good manageable plant? I want one that makes a good carpet plant but won't take over like java moss.

Any suggestions or comments?

Also, is it easy to find?

It's a beautiful plant. Yes it is manageable and easy to find.

You can by it at Aquabid, or any online plant store. You can also try certain forums that have a sell/trade section. Many people have this plant for sale, or for swap. You can request it if you don't see any posts, and more than likely, someone will answer you.

IME, this plant requires at least 2.5 wpg with co2. It does much better with a little more light, but co2 is a must.

When you prune the grass, make sure to turn off your filter.

i found my hairgrass at petsmart. i've seen it a couple times since then as well.

the trick to planting it.

pull the clump out of the pot and remove as much wool as you can. then you have to take a pair of tweezers and a small pair of scissors and cut appart each tiny little plant. they are all connected by runners. i usually do a small clump at a time, and leave the rest floating in a bucket of water so it doesn't dry out. then you take the tweezers and press each tiny plant evenly spaced into the substrate.

if you don't do it this way, and just break the large clump into somewhat smaller clumps, its just going to rot, and it won't spread well.

personally i think they are actually much easier carpet than moss etc, because once planted they root well into the substrate and spread quickly (with good water params). There is also no need to ever do maintaince such pruning/replanting etc like moss and other carpets.

But you have to make sure there is no other larger carpet plants like pygm chain sword, as they will take over the dwarf hair grass. Also no nosy fish like the sae, they will pull the dwarf hairgrass up by the root, wel i guess that goes for any small carpet plants.
