I just added a piece of driftwood to the tank, its currently being kept sunken via a rock, any idea how long it will take for it to be able to sink on its own?

The bigger the wood, the longer it will take. It can be many months or even a year + if its really big.

Hey impossible, im kind of a newbie in this hobbie but have tried to learn as much as possible about it. You may already know what im bout to tell you but just want you to know in case you dont. I had a bad experience with driftwood because i didnt know about "treating" it first. Which you may have already done.
If you put it in the tank without treating it, depending on what kind of driftwood it is it can, over time stain your water a tea looking color. To treat driftwood you can put in in a bucket of water and keep it there for a week or two, if the water has a brownish tint to it, empty it, fill it iup again, and repeat until the water is clear. Or you can boil it for about 20 min and repeat twice. I hear this release the tannins (the stuff that stains you water) really fast. Again you may have already known this but just in case :)

My LFS carries driftwood that already sinks when you buy them, and don't release any colour in the water, but they are very expensive, at $5 a pound! I'm not sure if that's a lot but I think that's pretty expensive for wood.

Boil! Boil!

Boil the driftwood, and the water will turn brown, dump it, and keep boiling thoroughly. Then you can let it sit, like in the sink, filled with water, and see if any more color comes off of it, and you should have no problem sinking it.
Just always boil the driftwood to sink and get the tannin out.

I'm using a piece of spruce root, i boiled it first and the water turned tea color. Its in the tank now,if it releases anymore tannins I'm hoping regular water changes will take care of any discoloration.,,,,thx for all the input !!
