The other day I was looking round my LFS and I saw a pink fish all by itself in a tank full of tetras, I asked about it and found out it was a kissing gourami. I'm no expert on gouramis but it was in a shoe box sized tank and the fish is a good 4-5 inches long and looked like it had nowhere to swim. So what the hell I thought I'll give it a good home and its now in my 50g aquarium. I've got quite a few plants in my tank and its taken to hanging around the same area of the tank near I suppose quite a heavily planted section. The thing is though it seems less active now, in the first few days it was buzzing all over the tank and now it seems to have resorted to hanging around the same bit, theres no obvious signs of illess infact the fish looks really colurful and eats well when I throw food in, so might it just be lonely ???, I've also got 3 opaline gouramis in there and there very active and seem really happy but I'm concerned my latest addition is bored and needs a few friends ??? any ideas, are kissing gouramis a schooling fish ?. I've tried to do as much research as I can on this fish but I've not managed to find any information that seems to suggest you need more than one.

This site says they are best kept in a group of 4

Also be prepared to get a bigger aquarium. Pink kissers can get to be well over a foot long.

I realise they can get large but a lot of sites I've seen say they generally never reach 12 inches in captivity, they generally get t about 8 in a captive environment. So I dont think my 50g is totally unsuitable. But ofcourse if I consider the fish to e outgrowing the tank then obviously I'll look at getting a larger home for it. In saying that I dont think I'll have room for another 3 as suggested above so not sure what I can do, might try one more and see how that goes.

There's an lfs in my area that frequently puts large fish in smaller tanks...BUT...with the understanding that it is temporary quarters. I almost NEVER see the same fish in the same small tank on the next visit. BTW...I have never had health issues with ANY of the fish I have purchased from this particular LFS either....not even a small case of ick....

Rarely do lfs have the larger tanks necessary to house some of these bigger fish that some of us would like to have....there would be no way for them to carry the numbers and variety of the fish we like them to be able to supply for us....if they did house all of their fish in appropriately sized tanks.

I try to keep this in mind anytime I go to the lfs around here and see fish housed in tanks that are really too small for them.......
