ive used it, ive never had any ill effects from it but the best way to get rid of amonia is to do partial water changes, no product beats that

Ammolock works by trapping ammonia within the media. It's a chemical reaction, with a definite limit; the media is only effective for a certain amount of ammonia. Once it is full, it ceases to remove ammonia from the water, and must be replaced. The problem is that the ammonia, locked in the media, is no longer available for bacteria colonies to consume. So, the bacteria colonies never develop to a large enough size to handle the full bio-load inthe system. Once the Ammo-lock stops working, the ammonia levels will spike, and expose the fish to toxic levels. Ammo-lock is suitable for EMERGENCY use in an established tank--for example, a food canister falls into the tank, or a massive die-off.

Mikey0 are you talking about the liquid ammo lock or the amo chips. If you are talking about the liquid ammo lock, yes it works. Read teh directions on it and follow them. The thing with using this is it transforms tha ammonia out of the toxic form ( or gaseous state) into a non toxic form. I think you have to use it something like every 2 days, be sure and read how much ammo lock to use to neutralize how many ppms of ammonia, if you have any questions on this just let us know.

Your liquid test kit will still read off the charts for ammonia because these test kits read the total ammonia in the water. If you want to see if there is any toxic ammonia in your water after using the ammo lock you will need to purchase an ammo alert (they cost about 7 dollars and you can get them either offline or at your pet store, seachems ammo alert). You leave the ammo alert in your tank all the time, if you go this route and get an ammo alert it will remove the need for testing ammonia with a liquid test kit unless you just want to double check to make sure its working. The bottle of ammo lock says that your biological filter will remove the locked out ammonia over time, this takes a while. Anyways, I have used it, it worked for me, this is not a replacement for water changes, and you will still have to worry about nitrite spikes.

I thik OrionGirl is talking about ammo chips, if this is what you are talking about, follow what she said.Happy Fishkeeping

Doh! Thanks for the correction! There are also regular test kits that will report just the amount of ammonia versus ammonia + ammonium (the bound, non-toxic, bio-available ammonia).

I think you missed the answer... yes ammo-lock works, BUT it will keep your filter from functioning well. Then you have to use it constantly, instead of having a fully functioning filter. A lot of money to spend when your filter ought to handle all ammonia for you.

This product is one to have on hand, for emergencies, for transportation of fish, for power outages, for when the water supply is contaminated and you cannot change water.

It dose not keep your filter from functioning properly. The biological filter will remove this ammonia in time. I was try8ng to communicate that there is going to be a huge amount of non toxic ammonia in the tank thats going to take the filter a long time to break down. It took my filter 6 weeks, along with weekly water changes for my water to register 0 ammonia with a liquid test. Remember that once the ammonia is locked out it cannot harm your fish no matter how long it has been since you used it. Have a nice day!!

ok thank u....i am not going to use it regularly..i use aqua safe.....i just wanted to try the ammo lock....but i dont plan on using it alot..when i do water changes i usually use the aqua safe.....it works pretty good.....so i will stick to that....unless of course in an emergency.....thank u for u'r replies....in my 10 gallon tank i have 2 zebra danios, 2 albino danios., and 1 pleco....i am going to get rid of the pleco and get 2 cory cats instead..as the pleco creates too much waste and will eventually be too large for a 10 gallon...any other suggestions on what other fish to have??

I used it with water changes while accidentally cycling with fish in tank. I used it cause I needed water conditioner for my chlorine etc.

I liked it all right. I prefer Prime now, but ammo lock kept my fish healthy in a tank where it's dosing was appropriate. In other words, you can get more for your money with other products, but AL works fine.
