I am just starting to get a few live plants in my 10 gallon and I want my next tank to be planted completely. I LOVE snails, but I won't keep them in with live plants if they're going to munch through it all. Will my mystery snails eat my live plants? I'll move 'em out if you say yes. They can live with the frogs for a few more weeks.

my snail is destroying the plants in my tank, im now getting the harder leafed plants coz the snail doesn't seem to like eating it as much as the softer leafed plants. i also put thin slices of carrot in the tank, the snails love it! and best of all they leave the plants alone.

You do have to feed mystery snails because they will eat your plants if they are starving to death. Just like you'd eat stuff you wouldn't normally like if you were starving too. Normally though, they'll just eat the food you give them and they don't touch plants, except if there are decaying leaves. Mine love steamed broccoli, cucumber slices, algae pellets, lots of stuff.

I do feed my snails, I was just wondering.

well to better answer your question, mystery snails (most commonly pomacea bridgessi (sp)) should not eat healthy plants. Some apple snails (cana) will devour any and all plant matter. The apple snails most commonly found in pet stores are not plant eaters. If you want better info on identifying the differences you could look at www.applesnail.net

I julienned some carrots and put them in there and the snails LOVE it! Thanks for that tip. I wouldn't have thought of carrots. I've looked at applesnail.net and I'm reasonably sure I have the pomacea bridgesii. I did see my largest snail crawling down my new cabomba plant yesterday, but it doesn't look like he ate any. I threw in a couple of tetra tablets for the cories tonight and the snail got there first or muscled his way in and was on top of both of them while the cories all skittered around him looking for bits. LOL

i tried some green beans last night, the snails eat it but still prefers the carrots. my snails also enjoy cucumber. you can try all sorts of vegetables. i think they like the carrots coz they're kind of sweet.
