Do ottos eat diatoms on sand?

I know they eat diatoms on plants and rocks. Do they eat diatoms on sand? I have diatoms only on sand.
 
I can't say 100% they will eat off of sand, but i know they will eat them off of gravel and other substrates. However, if this is just a case of needing the sand to leech out the silicates, i would just keep stirring up the sand and vaccing over it sand to suck it up....
