my other fish have cycles of activity/inactivity. like, most of my water column guys will turn pale at night and hover near the surface. my dojo loaches are more active at night, swimming all over the tank, and will be active intermittently during the day, but are usually "sleeping" during daylight. my upside-down cats hide all day and only come out after dark.

but my glass catfish, they're doing the same thing basically all the time in terms of activity level. during the day, they hide in their cave i constructed of artficial roots becaues they don't like the light. but once the lights go out, they drift all over the tank. they'll do this at night and pretty soon after i turn the lights out momentarily during the day, like if i'm moving some decorations. so it seems like they're awake and alert all the time.

i'm wondering if i'm doing something to mess up their circadian rhythm. or is this normal? am i going to drive them to early deaths from sleep deprivation?
i'm an insomniac myself so i know how exhausting it can be to go days with only a few hours of sleep, caught here and there in snippets.

other than that, they're healthy. they take a variety of foods and eat like pigs.

 They're probably trying to catch '40 winks' while the lites are on & here you come w/ that darn vacuum :) :coffee2: :) Seriously they'll be fine (unless you do it for hours everyday lol !!) My 'Cat' comes out if I'm cleaning but goes right back when I'm done 'no harm - no foul'. Hope to get a better shot one day but this is his usual position. SLEEP

I concur with the above. an icthyologist like you should know a fishes metabolism is fairly different than ours, since they are poikotherms, correct?

thanks for the vote of confidence :)
actually, there's hardly anything known about fish sleep. heck, there's not much known about the way WE sleep, either. i just wanted to get a second opinion, especially from other glass catfish owners.

so if anyone else out there has anything to add, please do. i appreciate it.

 Found another one after I disturbed him yet again!

The 'glass cats' will be fine---Stop Worrying!!

well, glass cats are water column species, not bottom feeders like other catfish. they spend 100% of their time hovering in place. and not like my "normal" water column fish with scales that just adjust their swimbladder and don't have to use their fins much. these guys have to keep moving their tails and spine constantly. that's why i'm worried. i just wanted to see if any other glass catfish owners had the same experience.

sorry, Tony, i'm a worrier. it's one of the reasons i can't sleep at night :(

thanks for your reassurance, tho, as always.
