Well, it isn't really a major mod, but from what I gather I have created an additional wet-dry area in my 5 gallon eclipse hex filter above the normal filter by adding an additional filter pad for a small whisper filter cut to shape. The original filter pad, the blue one, still acts fully submerged, while the white pad acts as a wet-dry getting water splashed onto it. How much it adds I don't really know, but every filter I own has a bunch of extra media stuffed into it and I thought this would work.

No overflow from this setup, and I just love knowing I have the max filter area. You should see my emperor 400 back home, it's stocked completely full of media in every tiny little space.

I used to stuff my filters full of media, now I leave more space because I don't service them religiously every 2 weeks like I used to. Once a month *if they're lucky* - and with that kind of time between cleanings, overflow happens. ;)

Plus, if your tank reads 0 ammonia, then there is already plenty of surface area on the biomedia for sufficient bacteria to handle the tank's bioload, therefore adding the additional biomedia in the wet/dry setup is really of no benefit.
