I am going to set up a 10g shrimp tank and was wondering about a sponge filter solution. i have enough money to get plants and other decorative things but i dont really want to go out and buy a sponge filter. i dont know much about them but would it work kind of the same if i was to take some kind of sponge media and attach it to the intake of my preexisting filter?

Sure, that would work. There's a couple of articles on DIY filters here:

I've never found an attractive looking sponge filter intake. I've used square pieces of the white sponges made for AquaClears (just carved a hole out of them) and I've seen these yellow ones on Aquabid fairly frequently:

But never have found a black one like I would expect.

The only problem with prefiltering your HOB filter is it will clog more readily. Depending on what you've got in there for plants, what you feed, etc. it might need cleaning as often as weekly.

I bought one of those once. Stupid thing wouldn't stay on the suction cup and was constantly falling and then floating to the top.
