About a month ago, I picked up a 110 gallon with 7 discus and 2 angels on CL. Everyone was stressed after being in the SUV for almost 4 hours till we got home. I picked them up mostly for the tank and angels, but the discus had to come with me. Iv had them in about a 30 gallon cube until i could get my ehiem pro3e in the mail. mostly with the small amount of established media the previous owner was willing to give up. Never had discus, thought they were too fragile, but these guys seem to be resilient fish. After about 2 weeks, the angels started being bullies. moved them into their own identical size tank, they start laying eggs. The fry are free swimming and mom and dad are very busy trying to gather them up when i get too close. I noticed the one angels today had a red sore on his side fin at the base. It doesnt seem to bother him/her at all. maybe it was battle wounds from mating?
I started moving my ehiem to the 110 setup. after plugging it in and a few self primes, i notice a massive amount of previously unnoticed white debris shoot out. Its very thin and up to 1inch in length. It looks like peeled skin after a bad sun burn or the left overs from shrimp molting. obviously the discus are stressed form moving tanks tonight, but they now have regained their color, activity, their reaction when i am near, and swimming in the current. Everything seems fine.
Checked the old tank, and found a lot of the same skin-like substance. using a fry net and scoop a bunch out and it appears to be yellow mucus. Maybe shedding discus? Discus Plague? poor initial rinsing of the pro3e? Im lost and still a beginner with discus. Besides the angel with the red sore on the base of his fin, all of my critters are happy, no visible infections of anomalies, they are just swimming in a sea of skin.
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!
