I am using a digital therm that is supposed to be for indoors/outdoors. The outdoor temp reading for the tank seems way high for the temp the heaters are dialed into. Anyone using the same type or is there one for under water thats more accurate, and not a fortune.

I use $9.99 indoor/outdoor digital thermometers from Radio Shack. The probe for the outdoor temp (that gets put into the tank) is sealed.

I have a number of these in service and they work well.

Jim's thermometer is a good way to go.. I have one like this and it costs more..

The 9.99 is the price I paid for mine. No fancy features. My heaters are set at 76 and 78 but the theremometer reads 82. I'm thinking its not working right.

Most of the time, I'd put my money on the thermometer being accurate before the temp dial of a heater. It's the rare heater that actually heats the tank to the temp indicated on the dial. They often tend to run a couple degrees higher or lower than actual water temperature. The setting on the dial is pretty arbitrary; far more important is the heater's reliability and stability.

Have you cross-checked with a glass thermometer to see if the digital is accurate?

Jim

Well I'll be. The temp is the same with a reg glass one as with the digital one. I did not have any problems with the marine land heater in my 29. At 78 it's 78. But with these 2 Rena ones the temp is 6 degrees differant. And one of them looks to be getting a black color to the inside of the glass. Normal?

P.S. Thanks Jim for the suggestion. Phil

I liked the idea that they are approved to be fully submersed. Since I wanted the heaters on the bottom back wall they seemed the right choice. I am going to look into replacing it. Or them.
