you dont want too much surface aggitation...so in general i would say no...but i was thinking about it the other day and it would bee ok to make something that you could attatch to the wall of the tank above the bubble wall to stop the bubbles from making it to the surface then make a small hole in it pointing up and put airline tube in the hole barely stiucking out of the water....then you can have a nice looking bubble wall without disturbing the surface.....too much!!!

If you're injecting CO2, it's counterproductive. If you're not, it won't make a big difference. If you're not injecting CO2, having current in your tank, like that produced by a bubble wall, may actually be helpful by decreasing the amount of stagnant (CO2 depleted) water around the plants.

one thing your wrong about is that just adding air bubbles will not deplete the CO2 if they are disrupting the surface of the water they will, if not they wont change amount of CO2 in the water at all.....

In a non-injected tank, a bubble wand will have no decreasing affect on CO2 levels. Actually it will aid in stabilizing the tank's content with the ambient CO2 that occurs naturally in the air.

In fact, happychem is correct in his statement regarding the affect of any bubble producing implement within the confines of the aquarium.
Any O2 bubbles created or injected into the tank have nowhere to go but up. When they reach the surface, they create agitation.
To whatever degree, this causes a loss of CO2 in an injected tank.
