i bought a crypt several weeks ago. it was really 3 plants in one pot, so i broke it up and buried the roots in my gravel. there's one in each corner, and one in the center. the two in the corners look to be doing well. the leaves are green, they've got some new growth, and they look healthy. but the one in the center, where the light is brightest, its got new growth, but its coming up yellow. do crypts not like that much light? should i move it and put it more towards the edge and get something that likes brighter light for the center?

I have Cryptocoryne becketti under heavy direct lighting and it is doing fine. I had a somewhat similiar issue but that was because I lapsed on my ferts (dont know how though :p: ). Lots of new growth and more roots shooting down into the gravel.

The light is an 18W light less than 1" from the Cryptocoryne becketti.

How long is several weeks? My Cryptocoryne becketti "melted" about a week after I placed it in. Cryptocoryne's do not like being transplanted and will melt. But they do come back - usually bigger and better.

What are the nutrient parameters?

its been at least a month since i put it in. mine never melted. each one lost like one outer leaf that just kind of got all mushy and fell off, and i had to pull them out to keep them from getting sucked into the filter, but no other leaves melted. i dont know about the nutrients. i know i have hard water, and my nitrates are about 15ppm. i have city water, i should probably call the water company and ask them.

i just dont get why two of them are doing great, but the third in the middle is yellowing. the middle one has some brown algae growing on it, and i keep wiping it off, but it comes back in a couple days. could that be it? the other two also have some, but not as much because they're farther from the light.

i also just replaced the lightbulb about 2 weeks ago. its a GE plant and aquarium light, 15 watt, 18x1" flourecent.

Maybe since the crypt under the light "grows" more because of more access to light to process photosynthesis, it needs more nutrients which may be lacking if you dont dose/test for them. Try moving it in a similiar position as the others. This is my only though/help. THis way if will utilize the nutrients from water changes like hte others and not turn yellow.

My guess for lack of nutrient would be Iron (Fe). In general, new growth that is yellow could be lack of Iron. Is the whole leaf yellow or just spots in it yellow?

the whole leaf is yellow.

i got the stats for the nutrients in the water here.....

Nitrate: 2.39 mg/L
Iron: 0.497
Sodium: 3.71
Hardness: 135
Alkalinity: 96.8
Magnesium: 10.5
Calcium: 29.3

there were a LOT with "ND" (No data) by them. there was no potassium.

how would i go about adding fertilizer to the water without hurting the fish?
