I recently bought a crawfish. told the guy to give me the biggest one he's got. he bagged it up, and I realized he had no claws, only six legs. the guy told me not to worry, the appendages would grow back when he molts. my question is, will he have mini claws and legs for a while? how many molts before his claws are in proportion to his body? he's about 4'' long.

It can sometimes be hit or miss for crabs/crayfish to grow appendages back. Often they will, but sometimes they don't. I suspect it would take at least several molts before they return to original size.

From what i've seen, the first molt will give mini-claws, 15-20% original size.
Second molt will give claws ~40-50% of original size.
Third molt will give 90%+ size.

This is what i've observed with dwarf crayfish.

they will sure grow back over time, like stated over several molts. when i first got mine a while back the males 1st molt went bad and lost a claw and 3 legs. theyve grown back all good with no after affects.

be sure he has ample hiding spots if housed with any thing else as they are delicate when molting.

I think he may be preparing to molt now, as he stays in the back corner of a half-flower pot cave, rolled up in a ball. he's been like that for a few days now. I did see him eating a little today, though...

If the Cray lost the claws in adult size they will never grow full size again. They will probably grow but never completely.
