I've only had experience with HOB filters and my next tank might have a different filtration unit such as a canister filter. Could you recommend a brand and model since I don't know anything about them? Also, if you could list some pros and cons about them, I'd appreciate that. Thanks so much.

edit: oh I forgot to add that it has to be inexpensive.

I myself just bought a Rena XP3 for my 42 gallon tank. The stand is high tho, around 43 inches. So I was looking for a canister filter which would have the strength to push water to a height of 60 inches, so the XP2 wasn't going to be quite strong enough. I love Rena products, they have always been reliable for me. Some people like the fluvals tho, the two are comparable in quality and price, there are just some differences between the two in features and build. Ehiem is great too but expensive IMO. I paid around 140 or 150 for my canister filter if I remember right. Just look online. I bought mine new, but if you looked, you might be able to find one on Ebay, or Craigslist....I am not that patient, and I like new stuff, it's my flaw. Good luck.

Unless you have the output tubing above water level a canister filter doesn't have to pump water up. It merely recirculates. The force of the water falling cancels out the force necesary to lift the water. That said the Renas are really good units, effective, easy to clean and can use bulk media to save $. A Rena 1 is rated to 45 gals, but the single basket is a bit limiting in what media can be used. A Rena 2 would be a better choice.

I use Rena XP3's & XP4's on my main tanks. No complaints whatsoever. I'd recommend the Filstar XP's to anybody.

I agree with SubRosa though, better to use an XP2 than an XP1 so you have room for media, and because it's usually best to overfilter a bit.

However, while the XP2's aren't incredibly expensive in my eyes, it is a matter of perspective. What is the most you are willing to spend on the filter? That info may help get some better suggestions if the XP's are a bit too much.

An eheim 2217 or a (used, no longer in production) Pro II series would be great for a 40 breeder. I run a 2215 on my 40 tall, along with an air-driven hydrosponge, and 2026's on my 2 40 breeders. You can find good buys on either from time to time on e-bay.

+1 on the SunSun302. I have one on my 40 gal breeder, one on my 46 gal bowfront and one alongside an Eheim 2217 on my 75 gal. Love the filters. :) No complaints. Have had them for quite some time now. :) Can't beat it for the price for sure!

I was waiting for the SunSun people to chime in, lol I didn't mention them, because I've never use them and can't testify to their quality.

They are certainly less expensive, and from what I hear from those who use them, they do a great job.

In fact, the only reason I ended up going Rena over SunSun, was because I was unable to find any replacement parts available for SunSuns on the web. I'm big on being prepared for the worst, so I went with a brand that I could replace parts on when they wear out, or if they fail. Then again, you can afford 2 SunSuns for the price of a major brand filter, so if it breaks, you can just buy another one and use the first for parts if the second one fails.
