I feel a bit silly asking this but after going or a cory research binge with mixed results I would like to put this question to the board.

What are the minimum, optimal (if it exists) or maximum (if it exists) school sizes for corydora catfish?

I am most interested in getting feedback with regard to aquariums in the 20g to 40g size but any insights are eagerly anticipated.

That sounds like a good setup. Yes, I have fewer and the schooling is low at best, more of a occasional company thing. With a bigger tank I will definatley get more. And as a peaceful fish I see no optimal other than as many as can safely be kept. Make sure to provide as clean of water as possible as they are fish that do not tolerate poor water.

I've got 4 in a 55 gallon and I don't really think that they school. They will sit in a group from time to time but they are usually busy scurrying around doing their own thing. I've read 6 or more are recommended, maybe then they would school more? Either way, they are fun to watch, easy to keep, and do a good job keeping the tank clean of leftovers. They get quite excited over shrimp pellets also.

Does it matter if you mix the different types of cory's, will they still act a group?

Like tetras of similar size and shape, cories of different varieties will hang out with each other to a degree, but it is best to get them from the same variety.

Get some males and females (look stockier when young, much bigger when older) and get them happy and you will be priveliged to see breeding behaviour - and possibly get some babies :D :D I've managed to bring a few on and its really rewarding :) :)
