I've heard two males per female since they are the ones staying in the caves, but on aquabid, I see just the opposite. Which - if either - is correct? Perhaps it's one to one...?

1m/1-2f would be best, unless you have a big tank. An established pair can be bred in a 10 or 20 gallon tank, but 2 males in such a small space won't work.

I have a pair of bristlenoses and they have bred successfully. If 2 males are kept together chances are they will fight. I've read 1 male to 1-3 females can work.

i have nine breeding pairs of Bn some are 1 m to 2 f and some are 1m to 1 f i have noticed that having two females will increase spawn rates usually one female triggers the other ( i remove the eggs once layed ) but then i have had a single pair spawn more often than a trio a 20 gallon is the bare minimum definetly not the size for trios and never put two m to 1 f unlesss the tank is huge and the extra male is just a waste really and a distraction better to pair it up with another female i think

Ok, you guys are great!! I was planning on putting them in a 30g minimum - possibly in a larger tank - not sure. I have a 90g set up with community fish, a breeding pair of rainbow cichlids (central american), and 6 younger (sex not known) calico bn's. I have 3 pleco caves and 2 cichlid caves in the tank (18x48 footprint. Once I know the genders of the bn's in THAT tank, how would you guys think I should arrange the male/female population. They aren't old enough to sex (except one that we know is a male, others are too young).

I was also planning on having a 55g tank just for various types of plecos. Thinking of some longfin calicos as well as either L333's or L066's. What would you think I could put in the 55g pleco only tank? Should I leave the babies in the tank to grow up or take them out? I know there are merits both ways - just need to know the most practical because I'm leaning in the direction of allowing them all to stay together until the tank gets too many little bodies in it! Thanks all! :girl:

I had a group of 1m 4f and all went great. I eventually got too many fry, though, and they stopped breeding until I sold some. One male is always enough, you don't need two.

Funny, I kinda thought that since he spends so much time in the cave with the eggs and fry, I would have thought more males, less females since she doesn't "do much". Thanks for setting me straight.

more females will drop eggs, even if he's guarding someone else's. My male would routinely spend months in the cave, coming out only at night to eat. There were always fry in there, of various sizes.

Ok, now I AM confused! If you have multiple females dropping eggs in various caves, how is ONE male supposed to tend to them all? If this sounds stupid, I'm sorry - I'm a pleco rookie!
