I have a friend who has a convict in a 10 gallon rectangular tank. He does regular water changes every 3-4 days. He has a filter rated for a 15 gallon tank on the 10 gallon. The cichlid is very heathy and the tank looks good. He doesn't have anything else in the 10 gallon besides the convict. He has lots of rocks in the tank and a few plastic plants. He keeps his heater at 80F, is that an ok temperature? Is it ok to keep the convict in the 10g. I think its a female, but Im not sure.

if its one fish I do not see a problem they only get to be 4 to 5 inches I believe., and the temp sounds ok to me, i keep my tanks at 78 . sounds like he is doing an ok job :)

Seeing as cons can get 5-6", it really would be better to keep it in a bigger tank. I suggest a 20g long minimum, and would personally only put them in a 30g. But if that's all he can manage right now, he's fine with it. The convict will likely be stunted or grow to full size and find itself in a very small tank, though.

it should be fine for now, although it would really help to have a slightly larger tank (20 gallons maybe) I just wouldnt add anything because of convicts agressive behavior

So it would be ok in the 10g until he can get a larger tanK? He just got it friday. Hes planning on getting a larger tank soon. Someone said a 15 gallon long was a great amount of space for 1 convict.

I wouldn't keep even one in less than a 20 long and preferably a 30.
