I have a 210G I am stocking and am considering Clown Loachs. After reading the profile on this site, it said that a max size of 12" is attainable but they raraly reach half that size in an aquarium. Can anyone that has owned them for some time verify that? Id like to get 3-5 of them but dont really want to devote a good chunk of the tank to them if they were to actually hit 12".

I did a seach and one site said they could grow up to 12 inches in the wild, but reaches only 6 inches in captivity. I don't have personal experience, but most sites on the net say this.

I've had clown loaches for a little more than a year, and they aren't more than 4 inches now. Even if they do get to 12", they grow really slow. Most other fish in my tank grow much faster than these loaches.

On another site I used to frequent, there were several people who had CL's that were older and around 8-10 inches. They do grow slowly, but it you get them, you will still need to devote a good deal of the tank to them when they get bigger, some of the bigger ones I've seen aren't just long, but very tall and fat too!! But I think with the size tank you have you shouldn't have a problem anyway, unless you plan to really overstock it. The CL's can be really disease prone, so it would be best not to overstock, just to help keep the water in really good quality :dive2:

clown loaches

Hi
I have 2 clown loaches which are 4inches each, they should only grow to the size to fit with there surroundings, like I had a small tank and the cloun loach was about 2inches and stayed that size for years.
Hope that helps. :girl:

Hi fredv! Chances are the clown loaches were probably just slow growing (which they are), and not growing to the tank size. Thats actually a myth. What happens is the fish gets stunted, making for very unhealthy and disease prone fish :(

Ive seen pictures on this site of really big fricken clown loaches. And making juvenile fish fit your tank is kinda messed up, similar to raising a puppy in a box

No problem, read some of the threads on here about bad LFS experiences, you'll be amazed!! Just like I was sold bala sharks and am now buying a 180g tank so I can keep them!! " Oh, they won't get very big..." yeah right!! Its always best to do some research about a fish you like before you buy, some of the people that work at those stores don't really know anything about individual types of fish, but sorry... :OT:

I've seen a loach that was 10 yrs old grow to 9 inches, tops. I've seen others at 12 inches, too.... They are a food fish in SE Asia and are very dangerous if they are out of water and feel dangered.
