I have a 50 gallon tank and am going to get ottos and catfish to maintain the tank. Do you think that i should get 8 of each 6 or something else?
Any input is welcome.
Depends , if you just love Catfish get as many as you want. If you want as much room as possible for other community fish , but still do a decent cleanup job, I'd say 4 and 4 as a minimum. It's true they are social, so the more the better, but they seem to do fine in groups of 3 or 4 . I only notice a change in thier behavior when they are totally alone.
Don't add Oto's before Algae outbreak ,though, because they'll starve. They won't eat hardly anything else. I never even had luck getting them to eat algae wafers. Only thing I could get them to eat was Zuchinni slices.
oto's need to learn food..many times they are introduced to a tank with not enough algae to sustain them..and they die..when introduced to a tank with algae and then adding alternative foods..they learn to eat other foods.
I keep angels and oto's are not a good mix with them..however bn's(bristlenosed plecos's do well and are adept at consuming algae..they can however, become territorial.
they are by far my favorite pleco.
Sorry i forgot a couple things. The catfish are corys. Currently there is 4 corys 3 otos 3 swordtails 2 blue rams 1 dwarf gourami and i plan to add aournd 8 tetras
