Hey all. walking around the beach on this glorious day, i found an awesome piece of driftwood. Now it is a VERY large piece (over 7 feet) but I'm only going to use this interesting little end bit measuring roughly 30x20x12. I need to clean this sucker once I trim it down- it obviously is not going to fit in a pot on the stove to boil and i read a tip on cleaning large driftwood pieces in the dishwasher (no soap, on high). does anyone have experience with this? is it safe? other than soaking or dumping buckets of boiling water on it, how can i make sure this monster gets as clean as possible?

That is a massive piece of wood! I would say the bleach would do a good job of killing any unwanted critters that may be living inside.

I have never done a piece that large before but I have run wood through the dishwasher and it worked VERY well. If you go that route run it through a couple times back to back to ensure saturation.

I should also note that I was having issues with some sort of growth on the wood and a double cycle through the dishwasher squashed it!

I've never done wood in my dishwasher, but when I used plastic aquarium plants, I cleaned the algae off them all the time in the dishwasher and never had any problems with ill effects in my tanks. As you noted, absolutely no soap!

its a dry peice of wood. there is nothing in there that is going to hurt your fish.

don't use bleach. the bleach/water solution will be hard to rinse out of all the fissues in the wood- which could leach back out into your tank.

don't use soap - same as above.

just rinse it with some water and put it in your tank.

if you are concerned about tannis, then you need to soak it in a vessel with water first.

otherwise, just give it a rinse to get dirt off and put it in your tank.
