I don't know why this just struck me, but why is it not common practice to use clean-up crews in a goldfish tank? Do people and we just don't talk about it?
I would think mainly its because most fish that are considered part of the "clean-up crew" are tropicals and don't do well in the low temps that goldfish live in.
Well, goldfish frequently search the gravel for food. This cancels the need for a clean-up crew. Frequently, goldfish are used as part of te clean-up crew.
Clean-up crew in my goldfish tanks has always been of the plec variety. If you know anything better that will tolerate the lower temps let me know. Also like the frogman said, goldfish are scavengers themselves; they do a pretty good job of cleaning up - course they also make a huge mess as well. What we need is a cleanup crew that will clean up all that dung. LOL
Interesting. Makes sense. I know little fishy stuff, I just thought it odd that there were so many "clean-up crew" related threads on other pages, but none in here.
I have apple snails. They do a pretty awesome job of keeping the algae down to a dull roar, and picking up all the food that the goldfish don't find. And they're cute, AND they surf in the bubbles from my airstone! No joke!
