Since i have been having so much trouble with my ten gallon with diseases and everything else i have decided to pull it down and start again. i am trying to think up stocking ideas so i can be ready when it is cycled and i was thinking of adding a centerpiece fish, a school of harlequin rasboras and some cory catfish. what would be a good centerpiece fish and how many of the other fish would i be able to add?

10 gallons is too small for a school of Harlequin Rasboras. They fit, but they don't have enough swimming room. I have a big school in my 55 gallon tank and they use up all the space.

Some of the smaller Corydoras would be nice for a 10 gallon with a centerpiece fish, like a Gourami.

Go with sparkling gouramis or honey gouramis as your centerpiece. As far as schooling fish are concerned, stick with smaller ones such as Hyphessobrycon amandae, Hyphessobrycon flammeus. Boraras merah, Sawbwa resplendens and other Microrasboras and Boraras. Threadfin rainbows are also fine additions. The only cories I would are Corydoras pygmaeus and other dwarf species.

Similar to ThePBM's betta tank, I'd go with a single male paradise fish, lots plants, and a trio of cories or trio of kuhli loaches.

i like the idea of the kuhli's i never thought of them, i used to have 4 of them but they died when i moved my tank, what else could i put with them?
thnx

A single betta, paradise fish, giant/banded gourami (Colisa fasciata) or thick lipped gourami (Colisa labiosa), a couple of female bettas, sparkling/croaking gouramis, or honey gouramis - any of those would work with kuhlis in a 10 gallon tank.

I don't think 4 inch fish in an 18"x12" tank are too big - especially for a single centerpiece fish. While some kuhlis get to 4" (most don't - many species stay closer to 3"), they're skinny and very light on the bioload and I think 3 in a 10 gallon with another fish will be fine.

If you are looking for a centerpiece fish with a small school, here are some options:

Option 1:
1 Male Betta/Paradise fish/Dwarf Gourami/Honey Gourami
12 Ghost shrimp (sometimes they work, sometimes they don't)
1 Snail

Option 2:
1 Dwarf/Honey Gourami
3 Platies
1 Snail

These are good if you want a centerpice. If you would rather just have a school of fish without a centerpiece, then you can have a school of 6 of smaller tetras such as neon/cardinal tetras or white clouds (white clouds require coolwater tank). Good luck with whatever you choose.
