Is 7 a good enough sized school of cardinal tetras? I just got 7 thinking that 7 might be to many and make my tank look really "busy" but now that they're in the tank, they're just so small (about an inch) that it doesn't look like there is 7. You know how when you look at something and it doesn't look like theres very many but when you actually take the time and count there turns out to be way more then it looks like? Well, thats what my school of cardinal tetras look like. I was thinking maybe i would add 2 more ( 9 in total then) to make the school a little bigger but what do you think? I do have room for a few more, they're going into my 20g with 3 black phantoms and 3 platies (my signature hasn't been updated for a while...should probably do that hey?). Oh yeah, theres 3 frogs too but they don't contribute much to the waste factor.

I think you could add six for a nice "baker's dozen" school. They're one of my favorite fish and I think a centerpiece school would be really pretty.

i have 9 cardinals and 4 neons and they are wonderful as a group (they don't seem to know the difference between each other) so i second the baker's dozen

it's really a matter of preference.

you could stay with 7, as i'd suggest 6 in a school bare minimum. But if you'd want to add to the school you can do that too.

If it were my 20 gallon. I'd add 1 card to make it a school of 8, and then have room for another fish to be named later.

Add a few more. However, don't necessarily expect a tight school. Aside from rummy nose tetras, my experience has been that tetras don't school very tightly unless they feel threatened, such as by the presence of a larger fish.:) Good luck!
