Canister Filter - What brand is the best

Thats it. Im looking to purchase a canister filter for my 50 gallon tank and need some feedback. What canister.....
1. turns over the most water
2. is energy efficient
3. requires little or no maintenace
4. wont spill all over my floor when I clean it
5. self syphines

Please provide me with brand & model name.

Sorry about spelling, not my strong point.
 
I have been very happy with my eheim 2227 wet dry,
I have had one on my 40 gal tank for about 5 months or so.
I had a small cat fish get caught in the intake (the sponge came off, i have a guard on it now) and it caught in the line, when i broke it down to get the catfish out it did not need cleaning, after about 3 months of use.
I am not sure of how many GPH it is but it is rated for a 75 gal tank.
It does not siphon, but once you get it set up it has a quick connect with a valve so you will not have to restart the siphon, ( i shut it off at least once a week to change water, i never have to restart siphon)
it is also very quiet, It is about 8 ft away right now and i can not hear it at all.

I have no idea about energy consumption

the only bad thing about the filter so far is that when it was shipped, the impeller shaft shook loose of its 2 rubber spacing grommets, so it made a LOUD buzzing noise until it figured out what the problem was. It took me about 3 hours of tinkering until figured out that the spacers has come off, i just slipped them back on and it has worked like a dream ever since.

PS there are some people who will try and sell you filters and other equipment on this sight (I posted a thread similar to this one before i bought the ehim)

I do not sell eheim or any other type of products related to the aquarium hobby.

I vote eheim but I have the classic line on my tanks so I cannot say anything about the newer stuff

Gots me a 2213, 2217 (two of them) and a 2260. In all cases I say they are amazing. The 2260 is a powerhouse but its huge and its not nearly as slient as the others but its meant to be in a back room somewhere. In my case, its beside the tank and I can hear a faint hum but its not really very noticable. The others are dead silent.
 
We've been very happy with the eheim on our 20 gal tank, and are buying the same brand for our 140gal. In researching them, there have been quite a few comments that the flowrates tend to be a bit optomistic and you should buy a filter rated for the next size up tank. So their 35gal rated filter is good for a 20 gal etc. True or not, not a problem for us as we'd rather have a greater than minimum capacity on our filter and were planning to buy the next size up anyway. The one we have now has been VERY easy to clean and does a great job--even with me mucking about stirring up the substrate every few days with plant problems and a slight overstock situation.
 
i use eheim 2213. at first it was making noises and i thought i bought a defective one, but i realized that the floor wasnt flat so the filter was shaking a bit and that was the cause of the noise, i put some piece of carpet and now its dead silent.
only regret is that i should bought 2211 as the current is too strong for my 6 gallon tank..
 
Just so you know Eheim is the cadillac of canister filters, very exspemsive. if you want something a little more affordable that also does a great job that many people use, go with Rena. You could even go with an XP3 which is rated for tanks up to 175 gallon (which is what i have on my 120), but there are snaller sizes too.
 
if eheim is the cadillac, ADA is Maybach then??

Yes, Eheims are Cadillacs and expensive, however you get what you pay for. They will last 10 years and some are still running at 20 years.

I have Eheim 2026s and I bought them because I'm in the hobby for a long time, not a short time. I consider them an investment and don't plan on having to replace them for a LONG time.

Please don't think there's any replacement in life to a little hard work...They're all gonna require some maintainence and it'll be about equal on all of them....Please don't get one as a reason to neglect a proper cleaning schedule...
