I would avoid concrete mix sand, play sand or filter sand are the safest choices

so this one would be better maybe ?

I know some people here use "contractor" sand. I'm not sure if that is the same as the concrete sand you're talking about, though I would doubt it. Play sand is OK, but the grains are so fine that they compact quickly. I'd stick with pool filter sand, as it seems to do better than play sand IME.

go with what US members reccomend because i dont know much about american brands. i use sand from a landscaper's in 5 of my tanks. i love it. its called medium river sand, and it looks really, really nice. i also use it with my blue tongue skinks. it is just basically a quartz and sand combo, but it is fairly soft.

play sand is fine, IMO, if you just give it a lil stir here and there once in a while. use a chopstick.

i'm planning on getting all the pea gravel out of my tank soon and just go with sand.

I have all purpose sand in 2 of my tanks. It's cheap, and the fish don't mind it, but there is a lot of pea gravel in it which I don't really like the look of. Also it stirs up real easy, and no matter how much water I change it still looks foggy. I would go with the play sand for a few more dollars.

I just go to my brother's father-in-law's gravel pit and grab either the coarsest or next to coarsest sand they have. both are nice and soft the coarser stuff has some small pea gravel in it which I like the look of.

I've been using sand we get from Lowe's for about 2 years now and it's sold in the concrete section. It's about $6.00 for a 100 lb. bag. The package is labeled silica sand and it comes as 16 grit and 20 grit.

This has worked out great for us. The grains are just heavy enough that I can python the sand the same way as if it was gravel... but it still looks like sand. Best of both worlds, really.

I live near one of the river quarries where general purpose construction sand is removed and processed for both HD and Lowes and I have been inside the and asked them how its made. All they do is take raw sand from the seasonally dry riverbed then screen it into grit sizes of gravel, course sand, medium sand, and fine sand. All of these are then washed and piled then bagged for use in concrete mixes depending upon application. Play sand is a mixed product usually medium sand with clay added so it will cling together and other additives to make it safe for repeated handling, probubly bacteria inhibitors. One thing is for sure, if you do use play sand be prepared to do allot of washing to get all that clay powder out of the same sand they get from the quarries and to repeatedly clean your filter of clay. Personally Id rather use the sand screened to reduce the work in washing before they add the clay.
