Can Peacocks & Haps breed

Hi,
I have some young Peacocks in my tank (2f 1?). I also have some Copadichromis Azureuz in the tank (1m 2f). One of my Female Peacocks has 9 babies and I was curious if they are full Peacock and my 1 that I'm not sure about it a male, or she bred with the Azureuz. Is it possible for peacocks and haps to breed? I am just trying to get an idea if my babies are hybrids or not.

Yes, it is possible for peacocks and haps to breed, but not likely. They really only hybridize under circumstances where there arent females of thier own species present. But since you have both male and females of both species, its very unlikely that they would hybridize, unless the females of one species werent mature enough and the male went to the other to breed.

They best thing you can do is grow the babies up a bit and try to ID them as pure or hybrid. I think you would be able to tell quite easily. You could post a pic or two as well.

Peacocks are haps. Most of the blue peacocks will readily cross with Sci. freyeri. Sci. freyeri are known to cross with anything given the chance. Female lithobates will do the same. I've seen a number of hybrids between aulonocara and protos and aulonocara and placidos. It is very likely hybriding will go on if colors are similar. Similar coloration is the big factor in that.

I have to agree, haps and peacocks cross very easily. Even if there is females and males of both species its still possible. There are tons of peacock/fryieri hybrids out there.

I've even had mbuna and haps cross before(i had Lab perlmutt/P.electra crosses) in a 90g when both species have lots of females.

So yes its possible that they will hybridize but it depends on a few factors. Thats why when keeping africans its best to keep species that look quite different for eachother. Sicne you say yours are all juvies i'd assume they aren't colored up yet. Sicne they are all brown as juvies they probably can't tell eachother apart.

I wouldnt' risk breeding them untill you can be sure of tehe parents

99% of the cichlids from Malawi can potentially cross bred as they are decendents from the same haplochromiine line. The only exception are the few Tilapia species introduced to the lake but they are never kept as ornamental fish to the best of my knowledge.
