Hi -
I have a 180 FOWLR.

I got a red sea berlin x2 protein skimmer but i dont have room left in my sump to put it - in my sump i have two return pumps and a pump for my 36w uv sterilizer.

my sump is set up so the return goes thru bio balls, then to refugium, then to sump.

my question is: It seems like the only place the protein skimmer would fit is to use it as a hang on skimmer in the refugium -

is that ok to do????

Its generally not recommended, as the refugium is there as a protected spot for all the little microfauna to grow...and by putting a skimmer pump in there, you will be sucking a lot of that out.

ok - so that is ruled out - if i take the uv sterilizer out, where should i put it? ive had some ich issues in the past and really dont want to get rid of it if i dont have to

Can you not add either the UV or the skimmer to the main tank? Personaly, i have never ran a UV on a tank, dont see a point in it....but, thats a whole new debate which i wont fire up ;)

Does UV even kill Ich? I thought Ich was a parasite and UV pretty much killed bacteria? Totally clueless there, but that was my understanding. I mean, if you UV'd a snail, it wouldn't kill it, and Ich is a crustacean as well.

Can you remove the bio balls (bio balls are a nitrate trap and not needed) and put either the skimmer or uv pump there instead.

i am enclosing a pic of the bio balls and the refugium - you are suggesting i remove all the bio balls and put the skimmer in this part?

If you have enough liverock, then yes, the bioballs probably aren't needed.
