can fantails and orandas be mixed? also do i have room for anymore goldfish?

hi i was told by someone that orandas and fantails can not be mixed bc of their wens making it hard for them to eat. i was wanting a few more opinions on this. id also like to know if i have any more room in my 55. currently i have 1-ryukin goldfish and 2-fantails. my filteration will be a penn plax cascade 700 and 2 aquaclear 70s. i also plan on bamboos sticking out of the back for extra nitrate control. i would also like to know if golden dojo loaches can work with goldfish and if i could get any for this tank and how many? thanks!!
 
IMO Goldfish shouldn't be kept with other species due to the fact they produce a lot of waste & though Goldfish can tolerate it, other species don't. I've seen Dojos with Goldfish but in large tanks, 75+ gallons or more. I wouldn't go over 3-4 Goldfish in a 55 gallon. Remember they get pretty large. My Black Moor is over 9 inches long (butterfly tail) & my Calico Ryukin is only 6 but he's still a baby.

Some fancies should only be housed with thier own kind but Oranda's aren't one of them. They do well with other fancies, unlike Lionheads. Telescope eye fancies should also be only housed with other fancies that are telescope eye, like Black Moors, or with similair slow moving fancies like Ranchus.
 
Kiss of Crimson is dead on. I wouldn't do anymore fish, but an Oranda with fantails is fine. You might want to consider the larger Penn Plax filter to make your job easier. I love them for goldfish-- they are IMO one of the most underrated filters in the industry.

As far as I know, the only fancies that really need to be kept completely separate are true bubble eyes--they are just a fish unto themselves. Love 'em, but they have very specific tank requirements. Otherwise, get down with your bad self. My telescope even lives very peacefully with an oranda-- in fact, they spawned last year, producing a tank of interesting mutts!

I bet that was interesting. Who did they mostly take after? I agree about the Telescopes. Thier eyes are very sensitive and can easily be damaged by decor/other fish. Learned that the hard way with the Black Moor I have now.
 
Most of them reverted to metalic fantails, but it is too early to see. The telescope trait isn't dominant, so I will be happy if one of them develops a wen and takes after daddy. None of them appear to have telescope qualities.

Telescopes can be kept with orandas, but you have to be careful, as you said. The fish was talking about with specific tank requirements ( including filter covers, sponge filters, bare bottom tanks and specific water parameters) are bubble eyes, which are not the same as telescopes.

To your original questions, yes on mixing fantails with orandas. No I would not add another goldfish to the 55 gallon... stop at 3. Four would need something larger.

Dojos are an excellent tank mate with goldfish... really, the only other fish I'd recommend. And 1 dojo with 3 goldies in a 55 gallon would be fine... not overstocked. However, it's better to avoid having a solitary dojo. In three's, they are very gregarious and playful. And with 3 goldfish (if you still had all 3), there isn't room in the 55 for 3 dojos or even a pair of them.
 
Yup, agree with Kashta after my GF experience. I loved my dojos!! One of the most entertaining fish I've kept. They lived with a fantail and moor, but I didn't know any better when I first got them (like many starter-outers), and they were in a tank that was too small. :( Best to be safe than sorry.
